about minimal & cozy

I’m not your typical minimalist.

I even hesitate to describe myself as a minimalist.

I love cozy decor. I decorate for every holiday. I want our home to be the warmest, most welcoming place we know.

I also hate clutter and excess. Not “mildly annoyed by” — it genuinely stresses me out.

For a long time I thought those two things were opposites. Minimalism meant a white box with no stuff, and cozy meant bins in the garage. Turns out neither is true. You can have a warm, inviting, decorated-for-the-season home — with less.

That’s what minimal & cozy is about.

What minimalism actually means around here

It’s not about owning nothing. It’s about being intentional — fewer decisions about what to wear, what to eat, when to clean. Systems that take the mental load away so there’s more room for what actually matters.

I’m surrounded by meaningful things. I’m just very picky about what gets to come in the door.

“Just wait until you have kids”

So many friends said it. I had so many comments when I was pregnant around the effect of “just you wait – your house will be a mess” or “what are you going to do when you have all the stuff?” And here we are — years later — and our house still isn’t overflowing. Do I have more stuff in my home because I have a little one? Without a doubt. Honestly more than I’d like. But living with littles doesn’t have to mean going crazy with the clutter. It means better systems, not more bins.

A few things I believe

One in, one out — and a pause before hitting “order.” Most clutter is easiest to deal with before it ever comes in the door.

Small containers force boundaries. You don’t need a small home — small bins do the same job. When the bin is full, something goes.

If it’s meaningful, use it. Storing your grandmother’s quilt in the attic isn’t doing anyone any favors. Find a way to live with the things you love.

Purge first, organize second. Pretty bins don’t fix a stuff problem. Ask me how I know.

Caring for what you have makes you want less of it. Once you’re actually cleaning and maintaining your things regularly, you get real honest real fast about how much you’re willing to take care of.

Donate where you can see it land. Baby items to a friend, clothes to a place you know needs them. Watching someone else use and love something you didn’t need makes it much easier to give things away.
